Why Washing Your Hair Too Often Can be a Bad Idea

Everyone wishes to have healthy hair that appears radiant. But this is something that only a few people get to enjoy. The reason for that is because most people are unable to take care of their hair in the way that they should. This leads to serious problems. Not only does hair become weaker due to lack of care, but it can also start falling off the scalp. What’s worse is that improper hair care (regardless of how good your intentions are) can have the same effect on your beautiful tresses. We live in an environment that is constantly polluted. Hence, it makes a lot of sense to wash our hair ever day (often multiple times a day) to keep it clean, neat and tidy. However, most people are completely unaware of the fact that washing their hair so often can prove to be detrimental for their precious locks.

Reasons Why People Wash their Hair Frequently

Some people are unable to resist the temptation of washing their hair frequently despite being fully aware of the fact that it can cause their hair significant harm. There are many reasons why people opt to stand under the shower every day of the week. Here are some for you to reflect on:

1) The Use of Cosmetics or Hair Styling Products

Hair sprays, hair mousse or hair gels are products that are used to alter the look of your hair and keep it in shape. If you are the kind of person who has to use these products on a regular basis, then you probably wash your hair every day before hitting the bed. There is nothing wrong in washing your hair in an effort to remove the hair gel or the hair mousse. However, you need to realize that regular use of these products leads to excessive washing of the hair, which is a bad thing. Therefore, it is important for you to have a control over the amount of hair styling products that are you applying on a weekly basis. Using these products twice or thrice week is deemed acceptable. Anything beyond that will put your hair in quite a bit of trouble.

2) Scalp Sebum

Do you have oily or greasy hair? A lot of people do. And these people believe that the best solution to this problem of greasy hair is to let water run down their tresses a few times a day. Exposing your hair to an excessive amount of water is not really going to solve your problems with oily hair. You need to be a little more thoughtful and try out alternative solutions. There is no need to wash your hair more than once a day to get rid of the grease. The oil or the grease which is creating a problem in your hair is basically a substance called sebum. Sebum can be described as natural body oil which is secreted from the skin. Under normal circumstances, the sebum does not cause any harm to the hair. However, if it is left on the scalp for an extended period of time, it can turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and other germs. The bacterial contamination can eventually lead to scalp infections that result in hair loss.

3) Sweaty Head

People who live in areas with a hot climate find it really difficult to not wash their hair more than once a day. Staying outdoors for a couple of hours or even staying indoors where air conditioning is not available can drench a person’s scalp in sweat. A sweaty head can be the root of several hair related problems that might be really difficult to get rid of in the future. That being said, washing your head once a day should still be enough to beat the heat and stop the sweat from creating problems in your hair and scalp.

The Verdict on Daily Hair Wash

A lot of people struggle to wrap their heads around the idea of daily hair wash being a bad thing. We aren’t asking you to keep your scalp dirty, sweaty and oily for days at a stretch. You have the license to wash your hair every day of the week. However, try your best not to overdo it. There is no need to head to the shower multiple times in a day (unless there is an absolute need for it). In fact, you could shower several times a day without exposing your hair to the water. Speaking of exposure, the hard water or chemically treated water that your hair comes in contact with every time you take a shower can lead to dryness and damage. They strip your hair off moisture by getting rid of the essential oils.

It is also not necessary for you to use shampoos or conditioners during your daily hair wash. Exposure to the abrasive chemicals contained within these products can further dry out your hair.
